An overview of climate change adaptation and mitigation research in Africa

Research on climate change has increased significantly since the 1970s. There also been a particular focus Africa, given its vulnerability to impacts and urbanization trends that may have massive implications for adaptation mitigation. Despite wealth of publications in there is lack review studies highlight overall research landscape. If this status clarified, African countries can better deal with change. Hence, paper aims improve our understanding mitigation Africa. Our review, straddling from 1990 late 2021, recognizes foundations underpin literature. Based keywords associated Africa's mitigation, we undertook bibliometric by collecting 3,316 related SCI/SSCI articles. In addition, provided thematic evolution over three decades, compartmentalized into four sub-periods (1990–2007; 2008–2014; 2015–2019; 2020–2021). Priority topics themes dynamic time, some core concepts receiving more attention (vulnerability, food, water, energy security). Although number published articles exhibited rapidly growing trend, their distribution extremely uneven. Articles were mainly institutions certain parts continent, University Cape Town, making highest contribution. About 72% existing focused adaptation, while was less represented 22%. The results showed researchers examined not all countries. South Ethiopia, Ghana are hot spots, most largely neglected. Africa need future ability Assessing risks measures should be prioritized.
